About the Eversfield Organic Meat Farm
Eversfield Manor is an 850 acre organic farm nestling deep in the heart of the Devon countryside on the edge of Dartmoor. Its owner, Mark Bury, lifelong ambition has always been to own a small estate in the heart of the country. Whilst many might consider him to be mad, he feels so strongly about farming in an environmentally friendly way that he has decided to ‘buck the trend’ and invested in Eversfield, thus realising his lifelong dream.
Determined never to do things by halves, Mark has set about creating a model organic farm, complete with its own newly built, fully EU licensed cutting plant. This ensures that the same care and attention that goes into the farming at Eversfield to produce the very best organic livestock, also goes into the hanging and butchering – guaranteeing that we produce the best meat possible.
When Mark bought the farm it was in very poor heart; fields had been stripped of all their goodness after years of over use. Most of the hedges had been removed and the areas of woodland and the species rich ‘Culm grasslands and lowland hay meadow had long been neglected. Under the aegis of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme, Mark and his team began work on a long term program to restore the traditional Devon landscape. The old orchards that are an important feature of all Devon farms have been replanted. Miles of hedgerow have been re-established; the woods have been cleared of their scrubby undergrowth; 30000 new trees have been planted, and the Culm grasslands and hay meadows have been returned to their natural state, maintained with a strict grazing regime. Gradually, the old, depleted rye grass pastures are being ploughed in – with a little help from the Eversfield pigs! - and reseeded with traditional herb rich leys. Full organic status was achieved in 2004.
Organic Meat
Organic farming works best when original, native breeds of livestock are kept. Eversfield has a unique herd of ‘Heritage’ Aberdeen Angus. These are wonderfully stocky, hardy cows that thrive on the species rich rough grazing of the ‘Culm’ grasslands, producing dark, deeply marbled meat with supreme flavour. As the only estate in the world with the near extinct ‘Pristine’ bloodline, we have an active breeding program to make sure that this important line is saved for posterity.
Eversfield organic lamb is born and reared on our farm. Organic pork and organic poultry are reared for Eversfield by neighbouring organic farmers, though there is also a newly established small herd of Large Blacks at Eversfield.
The estate is a haven for wildlife of all sorts. Maintaining this natural balance helps to keep pests and diseases away from the farm. Eversfield Manor is certified by the Soil Association. To achieve and maintain our organic status we follow their very strict organic standards and are subject to rigorous annual inspection. This ensures the highest level of animal welfare and guarantees the absence of infeed antibiotics, artificial pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified produce in your food.
