Our founder, Mark, may not always have been in farming but the passion has flowed through his veins since he was just a boy. Spending half his childhood mucking in on the farmyards of friends, the muddy boots finally found him again in 2002 when he left the corporate world behind for the beautiful Ellacott farm…
Along with his wife, Emily and his children, Anna and Hamish, Mark set to work transforming his farm. His aim? To provide his family with the finest quality food produced honestly and naturally with animal welfare at its heart.
Kick-starting it all, Mark spent two back-breaking years planting over 30,000 trees, reinstating miles of hedgerows and laying fencing to nurture the land back to health after years of intensive farming.
Once trees had taken root and natural flora began to flourish once again, wildlife returned to the area and the soil was rejuvenated. After months of toil, the farm was finally granted organic status in 2004.
Working with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, Mark began rearing his own herd of native Aberdeen Angus cattle fed on a 100% pasture diet. This means animals feed on grasses and wildflower alone, never grain. Mark also introduced a flock of grass fed sheep to keep the meadows mown, and organic pigs were kept busy clearing scrub from the farm’s woodland.
With the award of the farm’s organic certification came the introduction of Eversfield’s first organic box scheme. Eversfield offered fresh, Soil Association organic certified meat for delivery to people’s homes, from our own grass fed organic beef and lamb, along with organic pork, poultry and wild game.
Gradually organic dairy, charcuterie, organic fruit and vegetables, wild fish and larder produce made it onto our online farm shop, delivering a taste of the South West to homes all over the country (even as far as the Hebrides!).
