What are the Health Benefits of Eating Organic?

Exploring the Health Benefits of Organic in our Fourth Organic September Article

The Soil Association’s aim for this year’s Organic September campaign is to highlight the importance of organic farmers and producers in protecting nature, wildlife and the planet. Whilst this does a world of good for the promotion of organic and begins to explain the benefits of choosing organic food, we feel it’s missing a trick. It’s only natural that what you put in is what you get out, meaning all the benefits of organic for animals, wildlife and crops ends up on our plates, too…

what are the benefits of organic food for health?

Better for You and Your Family

As well as the wider advantages of choosing to support organic, such as improving the standard of animal welfare, helping to battle climate change and boosting wildlife, eating organic food comes with many health benefits. You’ll see with a good cut of organic meat a beautiful marbling effect that comes with allowing beef and lamb to graze on organic pasture alone. This marbling presents a higher level of healthy omega-3 fatty acids, and organic grass feeding reduces saturated fats. Organic meat also contains higher levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. The nutrients from our naturally fertilised, organic pasture are transferred to the animals who eat it and in turn, are passed on to you and your family when you eat organic meat.

The same thing occurs with dairy products from organic, grass fed cattle and sheep. Some of the health benefits from organic dairy includes high levels of essential minerals and vitamins, including calcium, magnesium and potassium. Organic fruit and vegetables also have a higher nutritional quantity, gaining vital nutrients from the fertile, healthy soils in which they grow. Alongside more antioxidants, eating organic vegetables and fruits reduces the intake of harmful chemicals and pesticides used to grow traditional crops. Under Soil Association certification, organic farms are banned from the use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides, producing clean and healthy crops.

At Eversfield Organic

As you may know, all of the organic beef and lamb that we rear and sell at Eversfield Organic is 100% grass fed and finished for life. Even in the winter, our livestock are fed preserved pasture in the form of hay, and never fed any grain supplement. Not only does this ensure our animals live happy and healthy lives, but it also allows them to develop the healthy layer of fat marbling as mentioned above. The organic clover in our fields munched on by our livestock increases the level of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthier fat for human health. In addition, the healthy lifestyle of our animals reduces the need for unnecessary antibiotics, stopping these from entering the food chain.

As well as our Soil Association organic certification, we’re proud to be certified by the Pasture for Life Association (PFLA) for our organic, grass fed beef and lamb. The PFLA brings together British farmers who are committed to producing high quality food in a more natural way. PFLA farmers allow livestock to graze their pasture for as long as possible and feed preserved pasture when it’s needed. Whilst all the organic beef and lamb available from Eversfield Organic is grass fed for life, our PFLA certified range is finally back in stock now. Add your favourite cut of certified pasture fed beef or lamb to your next organic meat delivery and enjoy the benefits.

Our on-site Market Garden never use artificial fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides on our organic fruit and veg, utilising composting to return nutrients to the soil. These naturally fertile soils produce organic veg and fruit that is brimming with health benefits and does not carry any harmful chemicals to your plate. See for yourself with a pre-selected organic vegetable box from Eversfield Organic, such as our popular UK Veg Box or a classic like our Medium Vegetable Box.
