Duck is typically chosen when dining out, this is perhaps because people feel it has a high content of fats that are bad for us and therefore eating organic duck is a naughty but nice treat. However little do they know, duck is incredibly good for you!
"All in all, duck fat is a good fat," says Alejandro G. Marangoni, a professor in the department of food science at the University of Guelph. Good fat includes monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, and bad fats include saturated. "Duck fat is pretty high in monounsaturated fat, and thus not too high in saturates," he says. "I actually have a jar of it in my fridge." So consider ordering that duck confit next time you go out for a fancy dinner. One tablespoon (15 mL) of duck fat ranks between butter and olive oil.
Not only is duck full of good fats it is also packed with essential vitamins. It has a higher iron content compared to most other meats too and is incredibly beneficial for people suffering from anaemia or need a higher iron intake.
Vitamin A is one of many vitamins you can benefit from when eating duck, vitamin A helps to keep your eyes, nose and mouth healthy and supports the body when fighting off viruses.
Vitamin B1 is also found in duck and a lack of it can cause an individual to have a loss of appetite, feel fatigued or suffer from insomnia. Duck also contains Vitamin B2, this is what helps to keep our skin, fingernails and hair healthy.
Along with all of this, eating duck improves mineral density and decreases bone turn over helping to assist different issues such as osteoporosis.
Finally, in relation to duck containing good fats, it also aids metabolism. This is also due to its vitamin B content. Vitamin B helps to metabolise the fatty acids; this happens because it helps to control the metabolism by burning the fat rather than the body storing it.
