What is Bone Broth?

Wondering how to make bone broth? Ossa’s organic bone broth is made from the bones of organic, grass-fed or free-range animals, created by simmering the bones in water for 24-48 hours. Their selections include grass-fed, organic beef and lamb and free-range, organic chicken. Ossa use raw apple cider vinegar to produce their traditional broths, which results in a clear, high protein liquid. The broth’s natural protein is presented in the form of collagen – good for improving the structure of your skin and strengthening your bones and joints. In addition, Ossa’s bone broths offer amino acids, calcium, gelatine, magnesium, phosphorous and potassium – phew, that’s a lot of good stuff.

Usually, bone broth is associated with adding depth, flavour and nutrients to classic winter dishes such as soups, stews, stir fries, curries and noodles. Whilst some of these dishes can be enjoyed throughout the year, a little imagination can extend the longevity of bone broth past the winter months…

Bone Broth Smoothie Recipe

Ok, hear us out. You may be thinking that the meaty, savoury flavours of organic meat from bone broth could never complement a sweet smoothie. However, the flavours of a smoothie will overpower the broth, and even add an element of balance to green smoothies. This means you can enjoy a traditional springtime smoothie whilst still gaining the health benefits of the broth.

If organic fruit smoothies are your thing, try a berry variety with a hit of bone broth. The sweet fruits will overpower the broth flavours, leaving a creamy, protein-rich drink. All you’ll need is a handful of mixed berries, a banana, flaxseeds, water and your chosen bone broth. Pop everything into a blender and blend until smooth.

Prefer the greens? Add baby spinach, a Granny Smith green apple (cored but with skin on), a hint of fresh ginger, an avocado and ice, plus your bone broth, to a blender instead.

Bone Broth Gazpacho Recipe

When the hottest days of summer come around, you may want to switch out a traditional mid-week dinner for a bone broth gazpacho soup. Traditionally from Spain, a gazpacho is basically a cold soup, or blended salad. Typically including tomatoes, peppers, onions and other salad veggies, the dish is served cold as a reflection of the high temperatures seen across the region in which it originated.

We mentioned before that bone broth makes a great addition to winter soups, so adding it to a cold soup really isn’t too different. Just add your chosen selection of organic vegetables to your next veg box delivery (we recommend tomatoes, red onion, red peppers, celery, cucumber and lemon juice), pop everything in a blender alongside a splashing of bone broth and serve. The result is a perfectly refreshing summer meal.

Bone Broth Pasta Salad Recipe

If you’ve got leftovers from your organic veg boxes, why not try adding them to a bone broth pasta salad? This classic recipe is a summer staple for lots of people across the country, working as a filling dinner or as a yummy barbecue side dish. Mix it up a little by cooking the pasta in your choice of bone broth.

Alongside the suggested organic veg above, for this recipe you’ll need pasta, fresh herbs, olive or vegetable oil, balsamic vinegar, dried herbs, garlic and Medita cheese.

Method:

  1. Add around 3 cups of Ossa bone broth to a large pot and bring to the boil. Add the pasta and then simmer for 12-14 minutes.
  2. Drain the pasta and place into a bowl to cool. Meanwhile, chop the veggies.
  3. For the dressing, combine the oil, vinegar, dried herbs and garlic then whisk.
  4. Add the chopped organic veg and fresh herbs to the cooled pasta.
  5. Drizzle the pasta with dressing and stir.
  6. Crumble some Medita cheese on top and serve.
