Organic September at Eversfield Organic

Organic September

What is Organic September?

Organic September is a month-long campaign run by the Soil Association to raise awareness of the many benefits of organic food, organic farming and grass-fed meat. It’s a fantastic way for people from all walks of life to learn more about how organic farming can help tackle climate issues, how they can support their local farmers and how they can kickstart their own organic journey simply by choosing to buy organic fruit, vegetables and meat.

Here at Eversfield Organic, we specialise in delivering the finest organic vegetable boxes and organic grass-fed meat boxes to households across the UK, so the Soil Association’s ongoing awareness campaign is very close to our hearts.

So, why is Eversfield Organic…Organic?

We believe that organic food means better food. Food that has been grown with a conscientious wish to preserve and improve the natural environment in which it was farmed. Food that looks after the animals on our farms as much as those people who can enjoy the produce we offer. Food that’s better for us, and better for our world.

Our food does not require the destruction of natural order, the persistent use of antibiotics or the spreading of chemicals over our land. Our naturally diverse environment needs a little nurturing to help it thrive and provide us with naturally nutritious soils to sustain crop and livestock.

And how does ‘Grass-Fed Meat’ help?

On our farm and the selected organic farms, we work with, we make the most of our natural pasture to keep animals fed and enjoying the outdoors for as much of the year as possible. All the cattle we rear here on our farm are grass fed for life. Simply because the digestive system of these grazing animals is designed to digest grass, clovers, and other leafy matter and not man-made feed. We find this results in some of the best quality 100% Grass Fed Beef and Lamb possible.

The production of non-organic animal feed takes a huge toll on wildlife and the environment via deforestation, soil erosion, and the runoff of pesticides and chemical fertilisers. However, none of these problems occur with grass-fed animals. The grass grows without the need of pesticides, chemical fertilisers or irrigation on land that couldn’t otherwise be farmed. Perfect!

Here at Eversfield Organic HQ, we’ve used the month to chat on our social media feeds about what makes us so passionate about organic farming and produce.

Here are some of the facts we’ve been sharing:

Organic veg contains up to 60% more antioxidants

Did you know that the most up-to-date research shows that organic veg has a much higher nutritional quality than its non-organic counterparts?

There are between 18% and 69% more antioxidants in organic vegetables and research shows that switching to organic produce can lead to an increased intake of nutritionally desirable antioxidants, without any increased calories!

Insect and birdlife is 50% more abundant on organic farms

We love being able to create a little haven for wildlife here at Eversfield Organic. On average, plant, insect, and birdlife is 50% more abundant on organic farms due to reduced disruption of the natural environment. Even more impressively, there are around 75% more wild bees on organic farms.

Organic practice is bee-friendly and protects natural resources

Organic practise is bee-friendly and protects natural resources

On top of the fact above, not only does organic farming encourage the presence of more buzzy bees, but it also works to protect their health by prohibiting the use of toxic herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. Neonicotinoids, a widely used class of insecticides, are found by many studies to be especially harmful to bees and are therefore banned on organic farms.

Almost 300 pesticides are used in non-organic farming

Almost 300 pesticides are used in non-organic farming

Did you know that many pesticides remain in some of the non-organic food we eat, despite washing and cooking?

Conventional food production makes wide use of pesticides, which can pollute water and the environment. Organic food, instead, is produced with a maximum of eight natural fertilisers, less energy and more respect for the animals that provide it.
