Our Organic Certification

Eversfield Organic has held Organic Certification with The Soil Association since 2004.

The Soil Association is the largest and most recognised symbol of organic status. On this page are a few answers to some common questions about our farm, but for fuller details about organic farming and the Soil Association, visit their online resource where you’ll find a wealth of information:

What is organic farming?

Organic farming is an ethos based on natural and healthy methods with the welfare of the animal and the interests of the environment in mind, no chemicals or pesticides are used and all meat can be traced back to its origin.

How is it regulated?

Organic standards provide a framework for regulation and strict rules and inspections enforce the principles of organic farming. Anyone supplying organic food must meet strict standards and hold a license to sell organic produce and will be inspected annually with random inspections at any time.

Why is Organic Better?

We all want the food we buy to taste delicious, but many people also want to buy meat which has an ethical origin.  With organic meat, the consumer can feel secure in the knowledge that the following questions can be answered:

1.      Where did my meat come from?

2.      How was my meat produced, did the animal life a good life and was it cared for?

3.      What did the animal eat during its life?

4.      How was it killed and where was the meat prepared?

5.      What was the impact on the environment of the meat I eat?

Organic Labelling

Eversfield Organic products carry our Soil Association labelling and a trace code. The trace code identifies the origin of the meat, which animal it came from and from there we can look up the entire life history of that animal, its parents, everything it was fed on and any veterinary treatment it received. Any ingredients we use in our sausages, burgers and kebabs are also certified organic.

The Welfare of our animals

Eversfield Organic farm animals live a natural life, feeding on organic pasture and sometimes supplements which meet organic standard.  They are treated and handled kindly to minimise their stress levels and when the inevitable day arrives when they must go for slaughter, our animals are loaded in pairs (never taken alone) onto a small livestock trailer then towed a short distance of an hour or less where they’re unloaded and their end is swift, painless and stress free.

Preparing your organic meat boxes

The meat is then returned to Eversfield Organic and our state of the art fully EU Licensed Meat Plant where the meat is hung in chilled storage before being prepared to order by our skilled butchers and delivered to our customers in chilled insulate boxes.

Our environmental Stewardship

Eversfield Organic was the vision of Mark Bury who transformed the 850 acres of Eversfield Estate into a working organic farm over 4 years. Throughout this process, many environmental projects were completed to return the landscape to its natural state, providing a haven for wildlife and flora and fauna.  Over 30,000 trees were planted to create copses, woodland and habitat for small animals and birds, traditional Devon banks were constructed and planted with a  rich variety of plants and trees, ponds and small lakes have been created providing a haven for water-loving birds and animals and in the 8 years since work began, we’ve seen the return of endangered species including otters, birds of prey, rodents, wild game as well as a plethora of wild flowers and herbs.

Our Ongoing Commitment

Our Commitment to the environment continues, and we’re delighted to share our story with our customers.  We encourage visitors to the Estate where we can offer Holiday accommodation and a 4* luxury Guesthouse.  The perfect place to unwind in natural surroundings on the edge of Dartmoor, and see where our organic meat comes from by taking a Farm Tour.
